This is a wonderful interactive website for kids to explore different artists and art periods. The activities range from creating artwork on line based on a particular artists to taking virtual tours of artists' studios. Kids can even go on scavenger "art hunts". The site not only profiles various artists in the museum's collection but gives a good overview of the cultural and political context of the time period of each artist profiled.
Student activity: After showing students examples of Leonardo da Vinci' portraits and reviewing some of the characterisitcs of his work (i.e. sfumato), instruct students to enter the website and go to "Make Interacive Art" and then proceed to "Photo Op." After clicking on Photo Op students will be directed to create a digital portrait using existing images. Students then have the option of including other items to complete the portrait such as backgrounds, table objects, etc. Once they have composed the basic picture, they can choose from the "Filter" menu and apply special effects. If they apply the "blur" tool to the egdes, they can actually simulate a "sfumato" effect on their own artwork and become a da Vinci! Students will save the image and print out a copy for an inclass critique.
