This is a website based on the BBC series "Great Artists." It is a good interctive site for students to explore various aspects of the artists covered in the series. One of the sections in the site is called "Leonardo's Studio." Upon entering this link students see an artist's rendering of what da Vinci's studio might have looked like. When the student clicks on an object in the picture, it in turn opens up new windows that explore and explain what has been clicked on. For example, if the art brushes and palette is clicked on, the student is taken to a visual with text that explains about what art materials were like during the Renaissance and which materials were da Vinci's favorites. You can even rearrange the great master's studio.
Activity: Click on the "Leonardo's Studio" link. Ask students to find out the answers to the following questions: 1. What were some of the materials that Leonardo used? and 2. What were some of the science experiments that he performed? They can write the answers at the bottom of the web page.
Have students get into groups and brainstorm what would be in Leonardo's studio if he were alive today. Ask them to think about what technology he might use in today's world. Would his actual painting materials be the same or do you think they would change as well? Have students share their observations with the rest of the class.
